Check sites like Spokeo, Intelius or U.S. Identity to see what information has been gathered about you through public sources. Refer to each company's Privacy instructions on removing your name.

  1. Do not post things online that you wouldn't do or say to someone in person.
  2. Be cautious about whom you befriend online.
  3. Think before posting photos on networking sites, and about whether you want to tag them with people's names since it may fall into the hands of hackers or marketers.
  4. Set your Facebook privacy settings to Friends Only. Recheck the settings regularly since it can change when Facebook introduces new features.
  5. Do not answer "get-to-know-you" question games on Facebook since your answers can be provided to marketer.
  6. Learn to use the privacy settings on your internet browser.
  7. Use different passwords for your financial transactions and your social-networking sites.

What we can to protect ourselves:

  1. Visit Privaychoice.org to see how to block online marketers from tracking your online activities.
  2. Familiarize ourselves with Privacy Rights Clearinghouse and the Federal Trade Commission.
